Authentic reality for the arts?

Posted by Shoshana

Last week I was conversing with a colleague about augmented reality. In an email response, without thinking, I accidentally typed authentic reality. She really liked this, and so do I.

I looked up the term, and there really isn’t much online about this concept. I am happy to entertain what it could be.

What do you think authentic reality is? What would it look like in our industry?

To me, I think it is coming to terms with who we truly are, what we want to be, and how we communicate about ourselves to match our own realities.

I have used the word authentic in a few posts already. Let’s explore the meaning:

au·then·tic
ôˈTHen(t)ik/
adjective
1. of undisputed origin; genuine.
“the letter is now accepted as an authentic document”
synonyms: genuine, real, bona fide, true, veritable; legitimate, lawful, legal, valid; informal the real McCoy, the real thing, kosher “an authentic document”

“Undisputed origin” I feel is the key. There is no doubt as to who you are and what you are about. There is no other basis besides the root of you. In a world of conforming, to being one with the norms of society, one must be brave to not only define who you really are, but to be brave enough to be “genuinely” you!

Please do chime in with your thoughts on “authentic reality.” I think the concept deserves more exploration. I also feel that this concept, when practiced, is important to attracting bigger and better audiences that will be a part of your augmented authentic reality (see what I did there?).

Being real will attract real audiences, the best audiences for exactly who and what you are!

Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,
Shoshana

Colleen Tucker

“As an individual fine artist, the Audience Development workshop helped me take a hard look at how to reach people and how to keep them engaged. Performing artists have a built in "paying audience" which may be obvious but for me I have to generate my patrons one at a time. Finding a way to interest people in my art is a full time job; I found helpful tools that I had not considered during the workshop.” —Colleen Tucker, Pastel artist
