Wonderful Wednesday to you! I had a quick thought to share today. You may have staff or people in place that are real go-getters. They of course are already in the mix and in the flow of what to do and how to handle a situation. However, there may be another staff person or perhaps a volunteer that wants to help. If you want more people energy to add to your organization, you may want to rethink taking on too much of the lion share of potential work. Otherwise, you might just be leaving out some fantastic help that can be included.
If a volunteer or new person shows up, think about it before turning them away. New energy can help save your energy as well.

How do you recognize volunteers that will be an asset rather than a liability? How do instantly vet those that offer their services? It seems rude to tell a volunteer that they have to go through a ‘trial period’.
Good question, Michael, and I apologize for the delay. Your comment was in the midst of spam comments. I am so glad I found it.
I would never say to a volunteer that there is a trial period, but I would have a conversation, similar to an interview, to get to know them and their skills to be sure of the right fit from the start. Most of the time we do not have these conversations, and instead start them out on a volunteer opportunity right away. Getting to know them first will help solve most of the challenges of making sure we have the right volunteer for the right task, which without this initial step can create the situation of thinking of them as a “liability” instead of as an “angel of goodness.” :O)
