I am sure you have heard of music appreciation classes. Many of us have used “family friendly” formats as well. What if we combined levels of appreciation with formats? This goes a little bit beyond simply labeling the performances.
What if we had a season of discovery that leads the audience through a growing appreciation of your art form?
Imagine if you started off your season with audience friendly material. It would sell to new and old appreciators alike. Then the season would progress to more and more in depth repertoire until the end of the season is the programming that bends your ears, eyes and minds to open to the contemporary of the art form (if your mission aligns).
Programming for this type of audience development could be an adventure in itself, and it could very well increase frequency of attendance. What if you collaborated with your local college/university to include this as part of their courses? What if you offered this program as a continuing education platform?
I have yet to see this seasonal format. If you have come across an artist or organization that progresses the audience along throughout the season, please let me know.
What if we developed our audiences for audience development?
Cheers to happy and loyal audiences,
Shoshana
